Camping In The Red Rock Country Of Sedona
June 23, 2009
Arizona is a state with spectacular scenery and incredible diversity. Sedona is one of Arizona’s most popular destinations. Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon both feature some of the most beautiful campgrounds in Arizona. You can fish, hike, swim and camp near the clear cold waters of Oak Creek and you are sure to enjoy the views of the beautiful Red Rocks of Sedona. The area of Sedona is known throughout the world for its "Energy Vortexes", which are junctions of the earth’s meridian energy lines.
Just north of town is Oak Creek Canyon with its own dramatic beauty, swimming holes, natural rock slides and camping in its cool forest. Between Sedona and Flagstaff, there are several national forest service campgrounds providing a base for activities such as fishing, hiking, biking, horse riding and relaxing. All parking on Forest Service land requires the purchase of a Red Rock Pass. Contact the Red Rock District of Coconino National Forest for the latest fees and the most convenient place to purchase passes.
Camping in Sedona is a fun and economic way to enjoy some of the most beautiful scenery in Arizona, if not the entire USA; Camping is a year-round activity in arizona and campsites are conveniently located so you’ll be able to enjoy a whole range of outdoor activities. Everything from bird watching, horse back riding, touring the Flagstaff arboretum, exploring the native american culture and you might even end up sampling some of the best spas in the country. There are a large number of campgrounds in oak creek canyon and the area surounding Sedona• bootlegger campground• manzanita campground• cave springs campground just to name a few.
The most popular seasons for visiting Sedona are March through May and September through mid-December. Many of the campsites are located right on the banks of Oak Creek and shaded by Arizona Sycamores and cottonwoods. Those requiring reservations are generally located closest to the banks of Oak Creek. Oak Creek is stocked with trout, and you can also go swimming, hiking or birdwatching. Cave Springs campground is probably the most popular campground within Oak Creek Canyon; it is open from approximately early April through mid-October. There are 82 campsites of which only 11 require reservations but these are probably the best campsites within Cave Springs, being located on the banks of Oak Creek. Manzanita Campground, open all year, is located 6 miles north of Sedona on AZ-89a. The Blm of Arizona provides many opportunities for camping on public lands in this area.
There are not very many spaces for RV’s in the area but with all the public campgrounds and the sites available at the national forests, you are sure to find space for the smaller sized units.
Some of the roads are narrow especially in Oak Creek Canyon and they may be quite steep so you may not want to drive some of the very large RV’s into the area. If you have any problems finding campsites close to Sedona there are many opportunities for camping within 25 miles or
so and with an area as beautiful as Sedona and Oak Creek Canyon it probably will be worth the extra effort to drive a few miles if it should be necessary.
What’s So Great About Sedona Arizona?
June 23, 2009
Sedona Arizona is a community located about 100 miles north of Phoenix just a few miles off Interstate I-17 along SR 179 A. It’s a very scenic trip along the freeway with an elevation climb of around 2500 feet resulting in a temperature drop of 10 degrees. Along the last few miles on the State Route 179A there are many views of the towering buttes and spires off in the distance as you approach the beautiful Red Rocks of Sedona. Many Phoenicians will make the easy trip to escape the desert heat in the mid summer so they can enjoy the scenery and play in the water at Slide Rock State Park or hike on one of the 100 trails in the area.
Early explorers and then settlers coming into the area established trails along the rivers that lead to the high country. They worked their way north along Oak Creek Canyon to Flagstaff. Today these trails provide numerous opportunities for the hikers, bikers and bird watchers who flock to the beautiful Red Rocks of Sedona. Several State Parks in the area provide space for camping and picnicking and the rivers are stocked with trout so there is the chance that you might try a little fishing while you are visiting the area. One of the biggest draws to the area is swimming along Oak Creek Canyon at Slide Rock. Here the sandstone has been worn into long smooth chutes that are submerged under about a foot of water. These slides provide a cool, wet and really fun ride along the river bottom.
Traffic in the summer time can be quite a problem. Many people come up for the day and Slide Rock State Park which is a little north of Sedona can fill up very quickly. You may have to park along the roadway or in one of the fields nearby. Most of the roadways in the area are under construction and travel can be real slow. There should be a big change in another six months or so if the state doesn’t run out of money to complete the improvement projects.
Because of the beautiful scenery there are several companies that offer tours in the country side. You can find everything from trolley tours of the town of Sedona to jeep tours and ATV tours that will get you out into the back country and maybe even into some of the Indian ruins.
In the surrounding area you will find more than a dozen vortexes or power points. These are areas of grandeur and energy. In the past shamans came to this area to meditate and pray and because the area was sacred none of the native peoples ever lived here. They say that transformation takes place at the vortexes and people are able to use the energy they experience for healing, activation and the ability to awaken their spiritual side.
With the hiking, biking, bird watching, camping, fishing and back packing in the surrounding wilderness areas Sedona is a vacationer’s paradise. There is truly something for everyone. If you enjoy history, archeology, the great out of doors and the metaphysical or spiritual side of life Sedona Arizona is a number one vacation destination.
